The drugs promote in both males and females the growth of skeletal muscle (anabolic effects) and the development of male sexual characteristics (androgenic effects).<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-8\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Therefore, the proper term for these substances should be \u201canabolic-androgenic steroids,\u201d throughout this site, they are referred to as the more commonly used term \u201canabolic steroids.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Used for Medical Purposes<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-11\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Anabolic steroids were originally developed in the 1930s to treat hypogonadism, a medical condition in which the testes do not produce enough testosterone. Currently, they are prescribed to treat steroid hormone deficiency, such as delayed puberty and some types of impotence<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-12\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Sometimes, steroids are prescribed to counteract the wasting away of the body\u2019s muscle mass due to diseases like some cancers and HIV infection.<\/p><p><strong>Abused by Athletes<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-14\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">When early research with animals in the 1930s found that anabolic steroids could facilitate the growth of skeletal muscle, the drugs began to be abused for that purpose by bodybuilders and weightlifters. They later began to be abused by athletes in other sports because of their performance-enhancing capabilities.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-15\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Because their use can affect the outcome of sports competitions, anabolic steroids have been banned from use by all amateur and professional sports organizations.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">In some countries, no prescription is needed for anabolic steroids. Therefore, most of the illicit steroids sold in gyms, competitions, and mail-order operations are smuggled into the United States. Some steroids are produced in illegal laboratories or diverted from pharmacies.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1692\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1692\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Commonly Abused Steroids<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1692\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1692\"><p>According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, these are some commonly abused steroids:<\/p><p><strong>Oral Steroids<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Anadrol (oxymetholone)<\/li><li>Dianabol (methandrostenolone)<\/li><li>Oxandrin (oxandrolone)<\/li><li>Winstrol (stanozolol)<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Injectable Steroids<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Deca-Durabolin (nandrolone decanoate)<\/li><li>Depo-Testosterone (testosterone cypionate)<\/li><li>Durabolin (nandrolone phenpropionate)<\/li><li>Equipoise (boldenone undecylenate)<\/li><li>Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG)<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>What Are Steroidal Supplements?<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-19\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Steroidal supplements, promoted as hormone products or alternatives to anabolic steroids, are substances that claim to be converted into testosterone or similar compounds in the body. Many of these products are marketed and labeled as dietary supplements which can increase muscle mass and strength.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-20\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Up until 2004, substances called steroid supplements could be purchased legally at health food stores and other commercial outlets. But, in 2004, Congress passed amendments to the Controlled Substance Act making the sale of supplements like tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) and androstenedione (street name Andro) illegal.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-3\">3<\/span><\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-21\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The exception to the new laws was dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-22\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regularly issues public health advisory warnings about bodybuilding products that are represented to contain steroids or steroid-like substances.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-7\">4<\/span>\u00a0The warnings state: \u201cThese products are marketed as dietary supplements, they are NOT dietary supplements, but instead are unapproved and misbranded drugs.\u201d<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-23\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Because these steroid supplement products could increase testosterone levels in the body like anabolic steroids themselves, it is believed that their side effects could also be the same. Little research has been done on the side effects of these supplements, but the FDA warns they can be harmful.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1693\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1693\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">How Are Anabolic Steroids Used?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1693\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1693\"><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-26\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Depending on the type, anabolic steroids can be taken orally, injected intramuscularly, or applied through the skin as gels or creams. When used for medical purposes, anabolic steroids can be taken by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, orally, pellet implantation under the skin or by application to the skin via patches or gels.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-27\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">However, the size of the dosages used by steroid abusers can be much larger than those used for legitimate medical purposes. When steroids are abused for nonmedical purposes they are usually injected or taken orally.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-7\" class=\"comp theme-takeaway mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-callout mntl-block\" data-tracking-id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout\" data-tracking-container=\"true\"><div id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-body_1-0-3\" class=\"comp expert-content mntl-sc-block-callout-body mntl-text-block\"><strong>When abusing steroids to body build or improve athletic performance, users may take dosages sometimes 100 times the normal prescribed therapeutic dose.<\/strong><\/div><\/div><div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-29\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">According to researchers, endurance athletes typically use dosages slightly below replacement levels of 5 to 10 mg\/day.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">5<\/span>\u00a0Sprinters will usually take 1.5 to 2 times replacement levels. Weight lifters and bodybuilders will take 10 to 100 times normal doses.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-30\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Women athletes use lower dosages than men, regardless of the sport for which they are training.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1694\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1694\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Cycling, Stacking, and Pyramiding<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1694\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1694\"><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-32\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">People who abuse anabolic steroids sometimes use different methods, or patterns, of usage based on their goals. Athletes may use steroids for a limited period of time to accomplish a specific goal, but bodybuilders may use steroids for long periods of time. They include:<\/p><h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-8\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Cycling<\/span><\/h3><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-34\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">This method involves taking multiple doses over a specific period of time, stopping for a period, and then starting again. Typically, users will take steroids for six weeks to 16 weeks at a time, followed by several weeks of taking low doses or no steroids at all.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-35\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Athletes who know they are going to be tested \u2013 for example, during a specific event or competition \u2013 will time their cycle in hopes of passing the drug test. Cycling is also used to try to minimize the undesirable side-effects of steroids use.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-36\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">According to Dr. James Tolliver a pharmacologist with the DEA, the reasons that users report that they use cycling include:<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">5<\/span><\/p><ul><li>Ensure peak performance during competition<\/li><li>Prevent detection of steroid use<\/li><li>Reduction of adverse effects<\/li><li>Reduction of tolerance development<\/li><li id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-9\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Stacking<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-39\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">When abusers combine different types of steroids\u2014such as those taken orally as well as those injected\u2014it is called stacking. The idea behind the practice is that the different kinds interact to produce a greater effect.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-40\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Many users try stacking in hopes of increasing the effectiveness of the combination of steroids, but there is no scientific evidence to back that theory up.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-41\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><strong>According to the DEA\u2019s Dr. Tolliver:<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">5<\/span><\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Injectables may be stacked with oral preparations<\/li><li>Short-acting steroids may be stacked with longer-acting steroids<\/li><li>Stacking is never done in medical practice<\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-10\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Pyramiding<\/span><\/h3><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-44\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">In this method, users start with low doses then increase the dosage or the frequency until they reach a peak at mid-cycle. Then they gradually reduce the dosage or frequency down to zero. Typically, the pyramid cycle will last six to 12 weeks. This is usually followed by a cycle when the user continues to train or exercise without taking steroids.<\/p><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0-45\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Pyramid users believe the method gives the body time to adjust to the high dosages and the drug-free period allows the body\u2019s hormonal system time to recuperate.
